"SYDNEY BOYS HIGH SCHOOL"
ANZAC FRANCE AND FLANDERS TOUR
Tour Director: Ms Debra Gilmore
Sydney Boys High School, founded in 1883, has a long tradition in musical excellence.
The Concert Band, a 50 member orchestra, will be performing concerts in France and Belgium in commemoration of Anzac Day 2010, including ceremonies at He Australian and French Memorials in Villers-Bretonneux and Bullecourt on 25 April.
The Sydney Boys High School Concert Band music chosen for the tour is a showcase of Australian music - from "Down Longford Way" which is a traditional Tasmanian folk song that was arranged by Percy Grainger in 1936, to contemporary Australian art music composers Sarah Hoping, Matthew Hindson and Eric Gross.
Each of theses compsers has captured the space and light of Australia in their compositions.
The Big Band repertoire is jazz oriented and features some of Australia's most notable composers and arrangers, such as James Morrison and Ed Wilson. The band's signature tune is "I Still Call Australia Home" - composed b y Peter Allen.
This is Sydney Boys High School first music tour to France and as such, they pay homage to some of France's greatest composers and performers with Concert band arrangements of Pierné, Bizet and Piaf, while the Sting ensemble plays Massenet and Pessard.
The 10 concerts - in Paris, Fromelles, Ypres, Peronne and culminating in the Anzac Dawn Service at Villers-Bretonneux and again at Bullecourt - are free to the public.
For the concert at the Hôtel National des Invalides, please state that you are a guest of the Australian Embassy.
